Kitchen Garden - fall planting…

As our kitchen gardens are in their glory with ripening tomatoes, crispy cucumbers and mouth-watering melons, it seems strange to think about “replanting”, but if you’re looking to extend the season of your kitchen garden, now is the time to plant for fall veggies.

The warm days and cool nights are perfect for replanting some veggies - especially greens like lettuce, kale, arugula, swiss chard and spinach, and root veggies like carrots, beets, turnips and radishes.

And let’s not forget about garlic!  This bulb will overwinter to come up next spring for fresh cloves next summer.  I like to plant my garlic in the perimeter of my fruit tree “forest” gardens – but it will grow anywhere it get’s a little sun.

Where your beans, pea and lettuce etc. have come and gone – that’s the place to plant.  The old crops will have used up some of the soil’s nutrients, so mixing in a little compost as early as possible before re-planting is always a good idea. So… now is the time.

Those lazy days of late summer can produce a second round of harvest with just a little effort for delicious food well into the fall. Happy planting. 😊
